Recommended movies for coffee lovers

Imagine you've been at work all day, it's freezing, but you've just put on your pajamas, put your phone on silent, made the perfect cup of coffee , and taken a few hours for yourself. To accompany that moment, we at The Coffee Shop recommend a list of movies about coffee that you can't miss.

There are different genres of movies on the Internet to suit your interests. There are movies for romantics, for action lovers, for children, and the list goes on. But what about coffee lovers?

A truly beautiful part of the coffee community is the inspiration it draws from other industry professionals. Some of us are inspired by our favorite barista, our friends, or our colleagues at work, but others are inspired by movies. Because who doesn't love watching movies?

Coffee movies show us things from a different angle and often give us information we'd never see anywhere else, such as what it's like to be a competitive barista, or what it's like to grow coffee and what it takes to produce it.

In these films, we hear from the best coffee professionals we know in the world today, such as James Freeman, owner of Blue Bottle Coffee in the US, or Michael Phillips (2010 World Barista Champion), organic coffee buyers, importers, roasters, and more, and we hear their opinions and perspectives that can be revealing.

These films are beautiful, informative, take us to the heart of the industry, and inspire us.

We can all find something to learn just by watching these films, even for a quiet night in with our friends, life partners, or any other group of people who would enjoy watching these stories. They also work for those who prefer to learn something by watching rather than reading; watching a movie about coffee is a great option. All of these films are available online, sometimes for free and sometimes for a nominal fee of a few dollars.

Coffee Heroes (2020)

The film "Coffee Heroes" follows seemingly shy Polish barista Agnieszka Rojewska and her quest to become the first female World Barista Champion. She forms an unconventional partnership with former World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic, as he travels with her and coaches her ahead of the global competition.

Along with a team of coffee professionals, Agnieszka and Sasa travel to remote coffee forests in Ethiopia on a wild and off-the-beaten-path adventure in search of the "perfect" coffee to take to the World Cup in Amsterdam.

A film about coffee (2014)

The film is a love letter and a meditation on specialty coffee. It examines what it takes and what it means for what h2 defines as "special." The film takes the audience on a journey around the world, from farms in Honduras and Rwanda to coffee shops in Tokyo, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and New York. Through the eyes and experiences of farmers and baristas, the film offers a unique overview of all the elements: the processes, preferences, and preparations; traditions old and new, that come together to create the finest cups of coffee. This is a film that bridges both intellectual and geographical gaps, evoking flavor and pleasure.

Barista (2015)

The film follows five baristas as they prepare for the 2013 US Barista Championship. As a viewer, you are introduced to the elevation of the everyday beverage, in a craft culture not unlike that of beer and wine.

Baristas (2019)

This is the follow-up to the hit documentary "Barista" (above) that features four national barista champions from around the world representing their countries and their craft in an attempt to win the World Barista Championship in Seoul, South Korea.

Black Gold (2006)

An award-winning Sundance hit that changed the way millions drink coffee, Black Gold tells the story of Tadesse Meskela and her fight to keep her 74,000 Ethiopian coffee farmers out of Western exploitation. Black Gold exposes the truth behind every cappuccino and demands that each and every one of us who wake up at the smell of coffee be aware of that situation.

Into The Coffee (short film)

The film is about a female barista in Indonesia, Della Mifti. The film shows the world how important it is to be passionate and dedicated in the coffee industry and as a barista, because it's not just a job preparing coffee; it's a role and a job that's important to the world.

There are other movies that coffee lovers can enjoy. Sometimes, it's not really about the entire movie being about coffee, but rather how a scene in the movie involving a cup of coffee can make us relate.
