Dirty Matcha Recipe

Enjoy a delicious cup of Dirty Matcha Coffee in the comfort of your home with this simple 5-ingredient recipe. This creamy and refreshing drink can be prepared in less than 5 minutes and has all the benefits of coffee and matcha.

In this article, we'll explain step-by-step how to prepare it, how to combine the best of matcha and espresso to offer you a unique experience, and some tips to customize your Dirty Matcha Coffee to your preferences.

What is Dirty Matcha?

Like a dirty chai, a dirty matcha consists of the main beverage, a matcha latte, typically cold, topped with a double shot of espresso. The result is a drink with layers of color and flavor, and an extra dose of caffeine. In addition, many highlight its health benefits: the addition of matcha provides a large amount of antioxidants to the typical coffee drink.

Although the origin of dirty matcha is shrouded in mystery, some trace its origins to Japan, and most attribute its popularity in the Western world to Starbucks. While this coffee chain is best known for offering this unique beverage, many other specialty coffee shops are also experimenting with it.

The key to a good Dirty Matcha

As we briefly mentioned in the dirty matcha recipe, the key lies in the blend (or lack thereof) of the different beverages. The blend of the two beverages, which we'll call the gradient for lack of a better term, is everything.

The goal is to have an imperfect blend of the two, with the coffee sitting on top and the matcha at the bottom. This gradient is ideal because you don't actually want the two drinks to completely blend. You want some sips to taste like coffee, others like matcha, and some like a mix of both.

You will need 5 ingredients to make a Dirty Matcha

  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 4 tablespoons of Organic Premium Matcha/Premium Matcha
  • ΒΌ cup hot water (no more than 75Β°C to dissolve the matcha)
  • Β½ cup milk or non-dairy alternative
  • 2 oz of freshly brewed espresso

How to Make a Dirty Matcha

  1. Place the sugar and matcha in the bottom of a large glass. Add water and mix well to dissolve the matcha and sugar. Use our premium milk frother to dissolve the sugar faster.
  2. Take a spoon and turn it so the back is facing up. Place the spoon lightly on top of the matcha. Carefully pour the milk over the back of the spoon.
  3. The milk will drip gently over the top of the spoon.
  4. Then, using the same technique, carefully pour the hot espresso over the back of the spoon, over the matcha and milk. The espresso will float on top.
  5. Stir everything together and enjoy.
